Smit van Gelder submitted the painting to the Galerie Moos auction in Geneva in 1933. It is unclear how, when, or under what circumstances art dealer Bier from Amsterdam acquired the work. Bier sold the painting to art dealer Goudstikker/Miedl in Amsterdam in July 1940. The painting was then resold to Witzig & Co. in Munich.
