The provenance of this painting is unclear. It is unknown from whom Kunsthandel Hoogendijk in Amsterdam acquired the painting. The purchase probably took place in October or November 1941. Hoogendijk subsequently sold the painting to Herbst in Vienna, then director of the Dorotheum auction house. The work was then sold at auction on 13 April 1943 for the benefit of the Führermuseum in Linz.
