The provenance of the painting is unclear since the identity of the person who consigned it to Fred. A. van Braam's auction in 1943 is no longer known. In fact it is not even certain whether that is the same painting as the work in the museum.

This painting may have passed through Fred. A. van Braam's auction house in Amsterdam during the war. The possibility is being investigated because a Van Braam auction house label on the reverse of the frame appears to date from 1943. This painting may be the Two Sisters . This firm may have auctioned confiscated property in the war years. J.A. Kruseman's Salome with the Head of John the Baptist (inv. no. SK-A-5009) at the Rijksmuseum, was probably (also) sold at a Van Braam sale in 1943.

Deze mogelijkheid is onderzocht naar aanleiding van een etiket van Veilinghuis Van Braam op de achterzijde van de lijst, dat mogelijk uit 1943 stamt. Het schilderij kan mogelijk zijn beschreven als 'De twee zusters'. Het is mogelijk dat dit veilinghuis in oorlogstijd geconfisqueerd bezit heeft geveild. Het schilderij J.A. Kruseman, Salomé met het hoofd van Johannes de Doper (inv.nr. SK-A-5009) van het Rijksmuseum wordt (ook) aangeboden op een veiling in 1943 van veilinghuis Van Braam. [nl]
