It is not known from which collection this painting was auctioned during the estate sale at Mandelbaum & Kronthal and under what circumstances this auction took place. It is also not known when the painting left the collection of the German-Jewish art historian and writer Lothar Brieger-Wasservogel, and under what circumstances this happened.
This painting was auctioned in 1936 as Der thronende St. Marcus […] by Anthonie van Dyck from an unknown collection of a doctor and collector at an estate sale at Mandelbaum & Kronthal in Berlin. Furthermore, it is also not known when this painting left the collection of Lothar Brieger, who very likely acquired it at or just after the aforementioned auction. Brieger fled from Berlin in 1938 to Shanghai. He returned to Berlin for an academic position in 1947, but passed away in 1949. It is not known who sold it through Galerie Charpentier at the auction in 1955.
Het is niet bekend uit wiens collectie het schilderij tijdens de boedelveiling bij Mandelbaum & Kronthal werd geveild en onder welke omstandigheden deze veiling plaatsvond. Het is tevens niet bekend wanneer het werk in bezit was van de Duits-Joodse kunsthistoricus en schrijver Lothar Brieger-Wasservogel en onder welke omstandigheden het werk uit zijn collectie raakte. Dit schilderij werd in 1936 geveild als Der thronende St. Marcus [...] van Anthonie van Dyck uit een nog onbekende collectie van een arts en verzamelaar tijdens een boedelveiling bij Mandelbaum & Kronthal te Berlijn. Het is bovendien niet bekend tot wanneer het werk in het bezit was van Lothar Brieger, die het waarschijnlijk op de bovengenoemde veiling of even erna kocht. Brieger vluchtte in 1938 uit Berlijn naar Shanghai. Hij keerde in 1947 terug naar Berlijn voor een academische positie, maar overleed in maart 1949. Het is onbekend wie het werk in 1955 inbracht op de veiling bij Galerie Charpentier. [nl]
